At RFP, we take seriously our responsibilities to sustainability and the environment, which is why we are FSC® and PEFC™ certified, meaning we offer fully certified material to all our customers as standard practice. To further our commitment, we have a team dedicated to ensuring we only buy legal, sustainable and certified timber from approved national and international sawmills and distributors. Through all of the above practices and constant due diligence carried out on all of our suppliers we are EUTR compliant and are constantly working with our suppliers to uphold all of our commitments and improve upon them.

Ridgeons are a proud supporter of the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ®CO12052) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). We have held Chain of Custody certification since 2004.

The FSC ® is an international, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.
It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. There are national working groups more than 50 countries including the UK. FSC ® UK is a registered charity. It is supported by NGOs including WWF, Greenpeace and the Woodland Trust. Look for FSC ® certified products.

The PEFC is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) through independent third-party certification. PEFC UK was established in 2000 and is the member of PEFC International. PEFC International is an umbrella organization that endorses national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions.

PEFC works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to its eco-label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests.

With about 30 endorsed national certification systems and more than 220 million hectares of certified forests, PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification system.

Timber Purchasing Policy

The Ridgeon Group, in recognizing a responsibility to the environment, our customers and suppliers, bases its commercial activities on well managed forests, and consequently we are committed to purchasing our timber products from legal sources whenever possible. Many of our customers are requesting certified timber and we are pleased to be able to offer this through our fully audited Chain of Custody.

We stock full PEFC and/or FSC® product, where available, for both timber and sheet materials. We also have Chains of Custody in place to enable us to offer CSA (Canadian Standards Association), SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and MTCS (Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme) certified product.

We regularly obtain information relating to the environmental practices of our suppliers, and make visits to their mills to see for ourselves and to strengthen relationships.

This Company recognises that the independent certification of forests and the process chain is the most useful tool in providing assurances that the timber comes from legal and well-managed sources, backed by independent inspection.

We make every endeavor to avoid trading and sourcing wood or wood fibre from:-

  • Illegally harvested wood.
  • Wood harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights.
  • Wood harvested in forests where high conservation values are threatened by management activities.
  • Wood harvested in forests being converted to plantations or non-forest use.
  • Wood from forests in which genetically modified trees are planted.
  • Over 95% of the volume of timber we buy is softwood (coniferous species), principally from Scandinavian forests and all our mills supplying this product are recognised under either PEFC or FSC®.
